Is this the Future of the Engagement Ring?

So which one will you opt for? The dermal piercing OR the traditional style?

Well, believe it or not, some people are getting diamond dermal piercings on their ring finger instead of a traditional engagement ring… it’s true. What is this trend all about and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

So how is this body modification done? A dermal punch creates a pouch, by removing a bit of tissue, so the base plate can be inserted. The base plate is a micro dermal implant and is invisible under the skin; it acts as an anchor to insert the jewellery- to be displayed above the skin. So why are some choosing this unconventional manner, to display a diamond as if it is embedded into their ring finger, to symbolize one’s engagement. Well, those who are choosing this method insist that they never have to worry about sizing or resizing a ring. Of course, there is no need for sizing since a band is not needed to surround the finger. They also say that it is less expensive since less materials are being used; there is no metal band required. Micro dermal implants usually cost under $100 for the piercing and then one adds the gemstone cost to it. Of course, depending on the gemstone one chooses, this will certainly impact the total cost. Some like the idea that they can change the stone and the setting often and therefore, depending on one’s mood, they can create a different look as often as they want. So this trend is getting more and more popular because it creates a new look and a new twist to the “traditional” engagement ring.

However, others note that the dermal piercings tend to have more ways in which something can go wrong versus a traditional engagement ring. One needs to make sure that the piercer operates in a clean environment and is certificated to do dermal implants. Also, it is possible for dermal piercings to be rejected or migrate under the skin. This could cause an infection or discomfort, at the very least. It’s easy to bump a dermal piercing or catch it on your clothes and dislodge it. This could cause pain or irritation at the site. A dermal piercing requires a lot of TLC in the early stages to ensure one keeps it clean so that it heals properly. Wearing gloves can become uncomfortable. Scar tissue could form around the piercing. Although a variety of dermal tops are available to attach to the anchor bases, there are still more varied engagement rings styles to choose from. Changing dermal jewellery requires some special tools. Engagement rings and wedding bands can be easily removed and replaced.

Do we offer this type of service or dermal Jewellery at Jeff Walters Jewellers? Call us old school, but we are quite comfortable providing you with an endless array of engagement rings and wedding bands that wrap around your finger, can be created to reflect your style, can be removed if needed, can be created and sized in order to surprise someone very special, can be resized if needed, can be refreshed when needed and modified according to your wishes over the years. We happen to love the convention of the engagement ring, and working with that special someone to create a style that involves choosing a stone, a setting, claws, a metal type, accent stones, specific edging, band style, etc. All these decisions are made to reflect your own uniqueness as a couple. It symbolizes the very essence of who you are as a couple.

But the biggest reason we opt for the traditional engagement proposal… is the element of Surprise. Most of our customers come in to create a special and unique ring to surprise their fiancée-to-be. Only a traditional ring makes this possible. I know, you are asking…. Well, how will I know the ring will fit? We have many suggestions to help you decide what size of an engagement ring you will propose with. Here, at Jeff Walters Jewellers, we get sizing right! After all, we have been doing this for over 50 years. Based on some key information that we help you obtain, we can create a ring that is most often the perfect size. If we are still unsure, we even err on the side of it being too big… rather than too small. This ensures that your fiancée can at least wear the ring (with a little bit of tape wound around the bottom) until she returns for the perfect sizing. In other scenarios, if the two of you wish to create the ring together, then having her present ensures that the sizing will be perfect.

Sooo…what will it be for you… a dermal implant on your ring finger (doesn’t sound very romantic) or creating a traditional engagement ring? At Jeff Walters Jewellers, we promise to make it right and we’ll even give you ideas for a special way to propose! After all, we have been doing this for over 50 years.
