The birthstone for the month of February is the amethyst. Amethyst is a gorgeous semi-precious gemstone that ranges in colour tones, from violet to pale red-violet. The amethyst was a rare gemstone at one time when quantities were scarce. This made the amethyst almost as valuable as a diamond. However, in the 19th century abundance in quantities of this gemstone were discovered in areas, such as Brazil, which in turn decreased the price of the amethyst, making it a very affordable gemstone.
Amethyst was and still is a stone of royalty. Its regal deep purple colour has been a favourite among royalty for many years and has been displayed in countless pieces of jewellery. Amethyst was even used in the British Crown Jewels.
Today, amethysts are used in multiple pieces of jewellery. They are also commonly used as pieces of art work as its raw structure and formation is always unique. As a jewellery item itself, amethyst is used most commonly in pendants, earrings, and family rings. As well, for many, using amethysts in their engagement ring is a desired preference. The deep purple colour of the amethyst looks great when set in either white or yellow gold.
