The Way They Wore…

When jewellery is passed along from generation to generation, stories surrounding its existence are told. Many stones are shrouded in mystery and misfortune.  In fact, Kristin Young shares the story of one such stone full of mystery and lore, set in a beautiful necklace made by Harry Winston. The tale began long before 1951 when Shirley Temple was photographed wearing two identical pear-shaped diamonds in a necklace as part of an exhibition to benefit the “Washington Home for Incurables”. The diamonds weighed 46.95 and 46.35 cts.

The story goes that the diamonds were originally the property of the Maharja of Indore, Tukoji Roa Holkar, a colourful man who loved all things in excess and was thought to be behind the Malabar Hill Murder in Bombay, India. He allegedly killed his concubine’s lover.  He never did admit to the crime though.  He was later forced to abdicate the throne and flee the Country.

After his abdication, he traveled through Europe and met and married Nancy Ann Miller.  He gave her the diamonds as a wedding gift, but the marriage failed.  Then, Harry Winston bought the diamonds and had them set into the necklace that Shirley Temple wore to events.  Now, they are owned by a jeweller in Geneva.
