This question is all too common for women who are debating what to do with their engagement ring and wedding bands. There is no right or wrong answer; it all depends on the design of your rings as well as your personal preference. However, if soldering can be done to your wedding rings it may be something to consider.
Choose NOT to Solder
There can be many reasons for not soldering your engagement ring and wedding band together, whether it is because your job does not permit large jewellery which includes your engagement ring, lifestyle choices where you may only want to wear your wedding band by itself, etc. However, keep in mind that since the rings are not soldered together they constantly rub against each other which will eventually wear down the gold and could cause the shank of the ring to break. This repair can be costly, to the point where in some cases, the wedding rings may have to be remade all together.
Choose TO Solder
Some wedding bands are custom made to fit with the engagement ring perfectly! So why not just make the two rings one immaculate ring. Soldering your rings together strengthens the bands on both rings because two bands become one strong band. Soldering also keeps the rings from spinning and sliding around your finger; they remain as a clean and perfect set all of the time.
*Take Note: Ensure that the rings are sized to be soldered. Once the rings are soldered the band will now be wider and will therefore always fit tighter than a narrow single engagement ring and wedding band.
Can Soldering be Undone?
Yes! In most cases, soldering is a reversible process that can be done with minimal risk to your rings. The jeweler will carefully cut the rings apart and once they are separated they are filed and polished. Once this process is complete your engagement ring and wedding band will look as they did that special day you first received them.
Reasons to Unsolder your Rings
There are a number of reasons why you would need/want your rings to be unsoldered. Your rings would need to be unsoldered if they need to be resized (they can then be soldered back together), you may want to upgrade one or more of your rings, you may get tired of wearing both rings together or you may have a job that prevents you from wearing any jewellery, including engagement rings, where diamonds are pungent and could get caught on clothing or what not (perfect example is a solitaire engagement ring).
Whatever your decision may be, remember, there is no right answer, only your personal preference.
