We don’t want to ruffle your feathers, but every cloud may NOT have a silver lining…when it comes to diamonds, that is!
Inclusions are imperfections in diamonds which occur naturally when the diamond forms deep within the earth – and virtually all diamonds have them. There are several types of inclusions, all of which should be discussed and identified before buying a diamond, two of which should be watched for; FEATHERS and CLOUDS.
A cloud inclusion is a cluster of crystals found very close to each other inside a diamond. Like its name, if a cloud becomes too big in size and density, the diamond will look cloudy in appearance.

A feather inclusion, which has a literal resemblance to a feather, can be a little more complicated. This type of inclusion is a crack or break in the stone that can have a whitish or translucent appearance and can make the diamond susceptible to cracking or chipping, depending on the location. A surface feather should be avoided but a feather in the body is OK, if it’s eye clean.

Feathers and Clouds can alter the value of a diamond and aesthetically may or may not be desired.
